Our boat came with this huge hand-pumped water pump that would only be used if the boat was flooding and the electric bilge pumps were broken or not strong enough. I didn’t think much of it because the chances of us needing it are so low, however it is a very important piece of safety equipment and it needs to work! I drug it out of the cabinet I had it shoved into and assessed the situation. Mostly, there were no hoses attached so even if I wanted to use it, I couldn’t. I bought some vacuum rated reinforced hose for the intake side and a collapsible water hose for the discharge side to save space. After hooking them up on the pump following the arrows I gave it a test pump and realized that somehow the arrows marking flow direction on our pump were backwards so I had to swap the hoses. Now it’ll actually pump something instead of just sucking the collapsible hose in on itself! I coiled up the intake hose and laid out the discharge hose like a fire hose so I could easily pull it free without it twisting and secured both the hoses with Velcro strips.  The handle is tied to the pump also so it can’t be accidentally lost! We bought enough hose that the pump can be set on the deck and reach into either bilge from the top of the stairs and have the discharge hose dump water out of the back of the boat.  The whole assembly is put away nice and neat by the door and ready for action. I hope we never have to use it!

The whole shebang!
Ready to go! Our emergency bag fits right next to it.
