I freely admit that I’m a lazy photographer. I prefer to capture scenes as I find them, regardless of the quality of lighting etc, and can count the times on one hand that I’ve actually woken up early to catch a sunrise. However one of my coworkers had planned to do just that and hike up to the Makapu’u Point lighthouse. Jessica and I decided to drag ourselves out of bed and tag along.
The hike itself isn’t very long or difficult and it’s paved the entire way to the lookout point, however the difference in height between myself and my coworkers (I think Josh is like 6’5″ or something ridiculous) had me in a mad scurry up the trail. Luckily I didn’t die. None of us thought to bring a flash light despite the fact that we’re hiking very obviously BEFORE the sun rose. Derp. We ended up using the lights on our phones. It wasn’t too bad and no one got eaten by a wild critter.
The sunrise itself was a bit of a bust. Only a little color to be had but mostly overcast and not very entertaining. Ohwell I guess. Maybe I’ll try this again sometime.
While Jessica and I stopped at the lookout to watch the sunrise, Josh continued up a dirt trail (in the dark!) to the top of the hill. Jessica and I got bored of our spot and headed up to meet him and see what was up there. Turns out there’s a series of bunkers and old structures covered in graffiti. I love graffiti!!!!
By the time we were bored and ready to leave, all of the tourists and runners started to show up. It wasn’t crowded at all yet but there were a lot more people. The lighting on the landscape was pretty nice as well.
Next time we’re out here, I want to do this hike at night and get star shots. It’s super dark out here. Just have to remember to bring my tripod for once. 😉
