From Pierre, SD we kept motoring north to our first planned stop of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We passed a lot of farmland and old barns and houses. We also passed *so much* corn!
Belfield was actually a cute little town. Located kind of at the junction of where one highway crosses another we took a break for a breakfast burrito and coffee at a little coffee stand we found online. Unfortunately they were out of breakfast burritos so we had a surprisingly good hawaiian sandwich! We really stopped in Belfield because we realized we never went to a grocery store after raiding our pantry at home so we got bread and milk at the gas station and then drove into historical downtown to a local meat market for meat!
Eventually we made it to the National Park where we met up with our friends Chris, Shawn, and River from the trimaran Sorn that we hung out with in the Bahamas! Small world! They were headed to Los Angeles from Maine and we were headed to Washington and our paths crossed here!
We all set up camp and hung out a bit, then Chris, Jason, and I went on a little hike. (pics to come!)
While we were all getting ready to go to bed, the giant herd of buffalo showed up at the parking lot across from our camp!
So that was terrifying. Bison are HUGE! We were ok when they were all across the street but slowly they started migrating across the road and into our actual parking lot and campground. No one was ok with this because you always see the videos of people getting too close to the bison and getting thrown across a field with the giant horns, but they were surprisingly chill (we were all hiding behind our cars). They kept getting closer and closer! There were a few in the parking lot, and a few in front of the bathrooms, and a herd in the field where Sorn put their tent up and had all of their camping gear. The girls climbed into the cab of the truck while Chris climbed on top of the truck to watch them from up top! What an experience!
