I’m so close to being done with the upper galley cabinets and trim! The white really brightened that space up and matches the existing white formica countertops pretty well!

Masked off and painted!
Isn’t that better?

Aside from the custom cabinet I need to make for my “coffee nook” where the microwave used to go, the upper cabinets are DONE! I’m really happy with how they turned out!

We’re not done though… months ago I decided I wanted to paint the lower cabinets as well.  I’m not sold on the entire boat being varnished teak because it’s dark and heavy feeling and not really my style at all. So I decided to paint it.  But.. what color? Well… no stone was left unturned in the bowels of the entirety of the internet.  I didn’t want more white and I thought that gray would be the wrong color for the boat because of the cream interior.  I wanted a lighter, grayed-out green like this inspiration photo that I love!

That’s not a common shade for a boat and I wanted to use actual marine grade paint.  Eventually I found a company called Kirby that specializes in oil based paints in vintage colors meant to be used on old wooden boats. They had the *exact* shade I wanted!

Even the can looks vintage! I’m keeping it when I’m done!
NAILED IT!

But first…. we have to sand, prep, clean, and mask!

That always takes way longer than it should, but luckily I have the shop vac to keep the dust to a minimum.  Now we’re ready to paint!  I have to say… this is the smooooothest paint I’ve ever used. It’s slick and oily and the coverage is phenomenal! I may need a second coat, but that’s more due to the texture in the wood than the paint itself.  If I’d known how fantastic this paint is, I would have bought it for all of my other projects!

The color doesn’t show up very well at night (or on my phone…) but trust me when I say it brightens up the interior a TON! It’s so fun in there now! The only downside is that the brightness of the galley makes the rest of the boat look dull and dark! …but I can’t paint the rest of the boat quite yet. (yet…)

I can’t wait to get some good photos of it in the daytime! 🙂
