Our first stop for the day was “hole in the ground.” It’s exactly as advertised. 😉 Jason had a little fun driving the truck up to the rim and around it a little bit.
It is thought that the crater is a maar, a depression that occurs after water reacts explosively with volcanic magma, often forming crater lakes seen elsewhere, particularly in Alaska. In this case, the ancient lake bed dried up, leaving only the hole.
Our first visit to hole in the ground was on one of our offroad motorcycle trips. Jason rode down first into the middle. I could barely see him down there he was so tiny. It’s hard to really capture the scale of the hole in a photo…but it’s absolutely huge! Just another random thing down in Oregon to explore!
