The Baths at Virgin Gorda are technically just large granite boulders where the surrounding material has eroded away leaving house sized chunks of rock on the beach.  However, they’re much much more than that.  The Baths are one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited.  I went to Disneyland as a kid and thought it equally as magical, but as an adult the magic of Disney isn’t the same.  If anything, the Baths are even better as I can fully appreciate the geology, lighting, and beauty of this area more than I did then.

We left our overnight anchorage very early in the morning so we could be sure to get one of the few mooring balls located just outside the Baths.  On our final approach, the horizon was dotted with other yachts all racing towards the same goal.  We managed to get our dinghy tied up and everyone ashore to be the first ones into the Baths and only saw a few other people there by the time we made it back and were heading out to leave.  The heat of the day could be easily avoided by hiding in the shadow of one of the many boulders, or kicking your feet in the cool, crystal clear, blue water.

I can’t really say enough about this place, except that you have to go here! Since a picture is worth a thousand words and I took considerably more than one of them, here you go:

probably the most standard shot of the Baths
morning on the boat

Set the camera on a rock for a water blurring long exposure
the water was still bright blue
light peeking through

so teal!

One of many hidden paths
shallow cool water

Rashell doing the sorority girl pose for no real reason at all!
Sailboats for scale!

Self portrait with the crew
The clearest water I’ve ever seen
The parents being super cute
rashell stole my rash guard

Rashell again.
Notice the camera she’s clinging to for dear life as she leaps gracefully into a puddle of water…

signage. Since we parked at one end we walked it forward and backwards
This is my new favorite color. Tropical Teal.
Water coming in through a crack in the rocks
Just another beautiful cave
I took so many pictures of this

Giant cactus up by the parking lot
There were multiple ropes and bridges to get through the boulders

Light leaks
I hid behind a rock to get this shot
This gets deep enough to swim through! I remember doing it as a kid, but not now with photo gear!

The rocks have interesting colors and textures
