For this week’s photo challenge, Jason and I went up to Fort Flagler to explore the many tunnels and fortifications. There’s a lot of history up here.
Fort Flagler, along with the heavy batteries of Fort Worden and Fort Casey, once guarded the nautical entrance to Puget Sound. These posts, established in the late 1890s, became the first line of a fortification system designed to prevent a hostile fleet from reaching such targets as the Bremerton Naval Yard and the cities of Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett. Construction began in 1897 and continued in one form or another until the fort was closed in 1953.
This is probably one of the most interesting places I’ve ever been to take pictures. There were a few spots I wanted to shoot, but couldn’t because they were full of water this time. Every time I visit I learn something new about Fort Flagler or about photography. Love it!
