I have a great many hobbies… and sometimes it just so happens that I can do more than one of them at the same time. In this case it’s photography while scuba diving. I purchased the only “affordably priced” dive housing (that’s not a glorified plastic bag) for my (very expensive) camera. I’ve actually taken it on a few trips with me already and used it snorkeling, kayaking, and just generally playing in the water, but have never gone very deep just in case. Well, my camera is actually insured, so what the hell, right? 😉 Game on!
Here are some photos from the Harper Pier in Port Orchard which is a pretty beginner friendly dive site. It’s the place I’ve dove the most and feel most comfortable with and there is some life there to look at. I think our max depth was somewhere around 30 feet, but the camera survived the ordeal. Overall I need a ton more practice but it was also a ton of fun! Just take everything you think you know about photography and toss it out the window. 😉
So yeah, that’s a good preview of what diving in the Northwest is like. It’s a very different environment than my last underwater photos from Diego Garcia…
I did see one new creature this time: the Nudibranch. It’s essentially a tiny, beautifully colored sea slug. Apparently they’re usually from an inch to like 5″ long… but these were maybe 1/2″. No wonder I never noticed them before! They’re super neat! I want to get back into the water and try to find some more of them to take pictures of!
