While driving along the Southern coast of Iceland towards Vik, we saw signage for 2 waterfalls: Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. We visited Skogafoss while driving to Vik, however we missed Seljalandsfoss. It’s a good thing we decided to check it out this time, because this waterfall was awesome! Not only is it super tall, but you can also walk behind it! This is an activity that I think would be more enjoyable in summer. It was cold and wet and the mist got all over my camera. The water from the falls also froze all over the trail behind making the path slippery and pretty treacherous. I didn’t want to slide into a frozen pool of water, so we didn’t continue around totally behind the falls. The weather had cleared up a bit and was *almost* sunny outside. Good time for a walk!
Our rental cabin came with a small sheet of “local things to see” and mentioned another waterfall further along the trail from the main tourist parking area. The second falls were possibly more amazing than the main falls! The water comes over the edge of the cliff inside a giant crack in the ground. You start out at the river outlet and snake your way through the tall crack, gently stepping along the mossy rocks. It ends with the waterfall almost overhead! It was awesome!
Aside from the northern lights, this was my favorite thing that we saw on our trip. It was just that cool!
While driving the main ring road, you can see an island in the distance. We didn’t have time to take the ferry out to explore it, but we did drive to the ferry terminal. Lets just say it’s a bit more rugged than the one in Seattle… The waves coming into the narrow channel entrance would probably sink smaller boats and the wind was howling. I bet the ride to that island can be pretty intense!
