Deans Blue Hole is a large sink hole located west of Clarence Town on Long Island. It’s the second deepest blue hole in the world with a depth of 663 feet and a diameter of 115 feet. Most notably it’s the location of the yearly freediving competition Vertical Blue. We couldn’t come this far and not go check it out!
I was actually surprised by how accessible the hole is. There’s a road right down to it, a really nice beach, some snorkeling, etc. At low tide you can practically walk straight from the sand into the 600’ water! We all had a blast swimming around and seeing how far we could dive but eventually tired of it. At that point everyone climbed up the rock wall and jumped into the water! Hey, at least there’s no way to hit the bottom!
Overall, Deans pretty much exceeded my expectations. It would be a super cool place to hang out even if you don’t freedive and I was proud of myself for diving to the rim of the hole in about 35’ of water. Afterwards we went across the street to Lloyds sports bar to have some uninspiring, overpriced food and bullshit about how cool this place was!
