We spent 2 nights at Shroud Cay and I loved every minute of it. That is probably my favorite island we’ve visited (so far)! However the weather was looking good to head south so we made plans to leave in the morning and sail for about 4 hours, out of the Land and Sea Park, to Fowl Cay. Once we got out there though, we realized that, as usual, the wind was stronger and from a different direction than predicted. This put us sailing pinched into 17 knots of wind on the bow and bashing through waves at around 4 knots. It was super uncomfortable and nobody was having a good time. We really need to reevaluate our expectations. We have two weeks to get to Georgetown and there’s no reason we have to make 20 miles of progress today when it’s shitty out. We cut our trip short and headed into Warderick Wells to snag a mooring ball in the south field. After 3 failed attempts, some frustrated tears, and a bent boat hook we finally had our boat secured and headed ashore to pay our fees. Once we got to the office we found out that there was a ball available in the northern mooring field! The north field is this super narrow cut inside a protected bay that you always see pictures of when you look for the Exumas. Definitely worth the hassle of a little more motoring and moving the boat!
Apparently this mooring ball was only available because the boat who reserved it was too big to fit. Once the current started to change and the boat started to rotate directions, we figured out why. With the boat spun around facing the beach, the transom was only a few feet away from the sandy ledge and shallow sand bank behind. Jason literally hopped off of the back of the boat into waist deep water!
We did a little hike to the top of the mountain where people leave driftwood signs with their boat names.
