I don’t think this random little slot canyon in the middle of the Gold Butte National Monument actually has a real name, but it does apparently have wild donkeys… so I’m calling it burro canyon for convenience! Jason and I found this spot last time we were down visiting my parents in Mesquite and I just now got around to finishing my pictures of it! The trail down was a little more sporting than I usually enjoy, with a barbed wire fence along a drop off and a large ledge to drive the truck down and, of course, a 90 degree turn at the very bottom across some water! As usual, Jason just drove down it like it was nothing (I may be a little paranoid about damaging our truck..) and we were safely parked on the sand at the side of a small creek. The creek led down into a slot canyon. At the beginning we had to climb over some large rocks being extra careful to not drop our camera gear into the water. After that it opened up and was fairly wide all the way through with the creek being only a small trickle. Rumor has it that the burros come here to hide from the heat and drink water, which seems like a great idea out here in this hot, sunny desert!
This was a fantastic hike with gorgeous scenery. The shade made it cooler in the middle of the day and I’ll never turn down an opportunity to play in the water!
