Yesterday we decided to go ahead and sand the cockpit coaming seats and varnish them as well as the cap rails that we just finished. This morning, I brushed on the “primer” that will soak into the wood and bond the varnish (chemically it’s not actually varnish.. but it’s easier to just call it that!) to the wood. They’re going to look *so good*!
It was literally 99% humidity this morning, so we didn’t even bother trying to put a second coat of paint on the hardtop. We had to run to West Marine to get another can of paint anyway. When we got back to the boat, I spent some time putting things away and cleaning some more to prep the boat for her survey. I posted pics the other day of the tornado that went through our boat (ha!). It’s getting better! Really it’s only super messy on the starboard settee and on the little bench in the bedroom! Progress!
After a dinner break we went back to the boat and put another coat of paint on the hardtop. It was overcast and breezy, so it was pretty comfortable outside.. but it was still hot enough that the paint dried way too fast. I think we might not get a totally smooth finish with this. We’ll see tomorrow morning!
I also put the first coat of gloss on the cockpit coamings! It was too late in the day for the sun to really show how shiny they are… but it’s going to look really nice!
After all of our painting was done, I went back downstairs and kept going with my cleaning project. I always feel like all I’m doing is just moving things around to different places.. but isn’t that all that cleaning really is anyway? I started reorganizing things and cleaning the cabinets underneath them. The boat’s starting to look really really nice inside! A few more days and she’ll be ready to move onto!
I also put some teak oil on the bottom of the little folding table I’ve been working on. It looks really nice as well!
