Last time we were at Warderick Wells we were lucky enough to be able to pick up a mooring ball in the main area by the beach, booboo hill, and office. However on the charts there is a third, little known, mooring field at the other end of the island that I’ve never known anyone to use called pirates lair. It looked like it would be a very interesting spot and luckily the wind and waves cooperated so we could get into it and check it out! The entrance snakes through bright blue shallow areas until the boats are lined up in a beautiful tongue of blue water surrounded by sandy beaches and tall rocks.

Dart is still in his favorite spot

We spent a few hours at low tide floating around in a foot of water on a sand bar with our friends on Vela and then went for a hike on the island! The terrain is just as rugged as all the other islands we’ve tried to hike so far but we were able to follow the coast line and it wasn’t too bad.

At one point I was making a joke about how there should be geocaches on all of these islands because it would be like finding pirate treasure. Well, Vela took that and ran with it and made their own “pirate treasure” in a relish jar. (It was a tiny jar of rum and vodka). We climbed to the tallest point of the island and buried it! It’ll be fun to see if it’s there next season! This island probably doesn’t see a lot of hikers!

Probably not hurricane proof but it’ll do!
