Flamingo Cay was our next stop on our journey south. On the charts it looked like there may be a protected shallow anchorage at the southern end of the island that we could squeeze our boats into. There are 2 giant rocks that we had to motor the boats in between that made me a little nervous. Sorn is shallower than we are so they went up in the bay a little further and we anchored just behind. The holding wasn’t as deep sand as we would have liked so I wouldn’t stay here in any sort of strong wind but for the night it’s cool to say we did it!

Narrower than it looks

Time to go exploring! Our first stop was a cave large enough to motor the dinghy right into! It was full of fossilized shells and had multiple openings to the land above. (Be careful hiking off trail in the Bahamas!)

Next we headed to the beach to hike to the little pools in the middle of the island that are full of tiny red shrimp. Apparently the island used to have flamingos that lived here and ate the shrimp but they’re gone now. Rumors are that the locals ate them but they may have just not survived a hurricane. Maybe they will be back someday.

Engine block in the sand

Osprey nest. They complained at us all night long.
Headed out!
