Ian is pretty much obsessed with fishing so he brought along his fancy electric reel and nice pole so he could go offshore and deep drop into some 800’ water. (Honestly, he’s a maniac!) we collectively decided it would be easier to fish from our boat instead of the monohull so everyone moved onboard and we headed out the cut into open water. First off, we needed bait so we trolled in shallow water to get a barracuda to cut up. Barracuda are pretty much the only thing you catch in shallow water and they’re super undesirable! Luckily (?) we caught one quickly and moved to deeper water while Ian processed the fish on the back of the boat. We spent all day dropping heavy weights to the bottom and reeling in surprisingly small snapper. It was worth it to have fish to eat that wouldn’t have been exposed to the reef toxin ciguatera.
The next day I think the boys went out to do something and I took my kayak out on a little spin around the anchorage. There are a few little caves in the rocks that are pretty cool. I’ve never climbed up inside but it’s on my list of things to explore (with a flash light).
Staniel Cay has quite a few fishing boats operating out of the marina. All the fish are processed in the same spot and unsurprisingly the sharks have figured this out. They’re just nurse sharks so they’ve turned into a tourist attraction by day and when there aren’t fish they just swim around the boats!
