Where Jason’s sister and her husband, Jessica and Truett, live is about an hour away from the coast…and with the coastline brings fishing! Jason and I haven’t been tuna fishing in years so we decided to charter a boat and go get some fish! As an added treat Jessica and Truett hadn’t been fishing offshore before and they had a blast fighting the tuna! The boat that we chartered was a 31 foot Cape Horn center console. To summarize: it’s a badass boat. It had twin 300 horsepower engines with a top speed of around 60mph. We got to the boat and ran out while it was still dark. They have beanbags in the back for guests to chill in and we definitely “chilled” as we skirted a rainstorm on the way out and got sprayed with waves and rain. We quickly dried out and warmed up as we started pulling tuna after tuna into the boat! The way they fish here is to pull up right behind one of the big shrimp trawlers with nets, toss some chum into the water, and slowly drift. The tuna see the fresh fish and start swarming under the boat. The hardest part is keeping the sharks from taking a big bite out of your catch! (We only lost half of a fish! Not bad!) After we got our fill of tuna, we headed closer to shore to get our limit of red snapper. Truett even snagged a delicious triggerfish that (unfortunate for him) swam up to investigate the bait! We grilled a little piece of tuna and the triggerfish for a late night snack when we got back! I woke up this morning feeling like I got hit by a truck, but it was worth it! 🙂
We all had a fantastic time fishing! It was really nice to actually spend some time with Jessica and Truett! Hopefully they can come see us on our boat sometime to make up for us filling their entire living room with our camping stuff from the truck! 🙂
