After randomly checking out the abandoned 747 in the desert, Jason and I continued driving all the way across the playa to the mountains in the middle.  These mountains eventually make their way south to the actual black rock that the black rock desert is named after. This part of trail starts to have more sand dunes and grass and there’s a distinct path to follow instead of the free for all of the desert floor previously.

Sand path
Old fence posts
Shrub
Different lone shrub with better lighting than the one before.

The dirt here is still dry lake bed and it shows.
Does this count as offroading?
Can’t help myself on the action shots!

Shortly after getting onto a legit trail we run into our first main attraction on this section of the Lassen-Applegate trail: Double hot springs.  This isn’t so much of a hot spring as it is a spring that will boil your face off and kill you instantly.  The water is apparently 175 degrees and many people and pets have lost their lives here by accidentally falling in.  I was super extra cautious when walking around exploring. That doesn’t sound like a fun way to go! 😮

So many warning signs!
hot springs
Steam coming up off the water
I like the shape of the fence

The water is super clear
Reflections
More clear water
Mountains in the background
There’s our magnificent truck
The springs are an interesting shape
