The tropical decay of the old coconut plantation formed quite the contrast with energetic yet sterile Singapore.  Those of you who read my blog consistently know I’m fascinated by decaying buildings.  I could have easily spent all day (or two…) out here just exploring around and taking pictures of all the buildings and artifacts left behind after the plantation was abandoned.  This article has a lovely write up about the history of the plantation and what life was like on Diego Garcia back in the 70’s and 80’s, complete with vintage photos.  I’ve gathered that 20+ years of tropical sun, rain, and storms have taken their toll on the structures.

Due to some miscommunication with the bus driver we only had maybe 15 minutes at the plantation.  That was a shame really, because we’re probably never coming back.  However the next bus was scheduled to show up about 4 hours later and without food or water (we suck at planning…) we would have been a very unhappy, hot, hungry group.
