So there isn’t a local camera store around here.  The closest one is Robi’s Camera in Tacoma.  Roger, one of the camera salesmen, is who talked me into Sony when I upgraded from my old Canon.  He’s super knowledgeable about cameras, technology, and photography in general and I’ve always loved how he explains things in a way that both technical and easy to understand.  When I saw him post up that he was doing a portrait lighting class at the local community college I knew I had to sign up for it!

We spent all day learning about the theory of lighting, the different types, and how to move the light source around to get what you want. It was more classroom time than shooting time, but I had a blast and ended up with some nice pictures! Now I need to go out and practice!

Just natural window light
More dramatic window light
Flashes
Window and off camera flash
This one looks like a senior portrait
I added some bokeh by putting my lens slightly behind someone’s tripod…
Sunlight mostly
Isolating the model from the distracting background by shooting up at her against the blue sky

I wanted to use the tree as a background

Overall this class was a blast! I’m definitely going to sign up for more! Thanks, Roger!
