There was some debate as to how to properly pronounce Roche Harbor. I’ve heard it called Roche as in “cockroach” but it seems unlikely that a destination filled with wine and caviar stuffed yacht people would approve of the place they park their megayacht being named after one of the only survivors of the next zombie apocalypse. Pronouncing Roche like “row-shhhhhh” sounds better but reminds me of the people who say “Tar-jay” instead of Target like it’s really that much classier than walmart… so who knows. Maybe next time I’ll find a local and ask them about it.
Either way, I think Roche Harbor is my favorite spot in the San Juans. They had salted caramel cake this time at the restaurant (I’m easily bribed), and there’s a surprising amount of stuff to see there. We walked the sculpture park, visited the mausoleum, looked at the old lime kiln equipment, and played a round of Bocce ball… Next time around we plan on renting kayaks and then scooters to explore the parts of the island we can’t get to with the boat!
