Last year when Jason and I were in Nevada, we did a hike to the vortex starting from the dome trailhead in Utah.  The trail was pretty easy to follow and snaked along a bunch of sandstone rocks on the way to the mountain range.  The geology here is fascinating and it made for a very interesting hike!

We actually started our day by stopping briefly at the Sand Wash Reservoir.

Lots of water in the desert

There was a plastic lined chute that routed the water away from the reservoir and to somewhere else down below.  It went on for a long time. I bet it’s refreshing in the summer and I want to float in it, except that there’s a waterfall under the bridge that would definitely ruin your day!

Apparently this area has had the name of the trails changed a few times.  It starts out as the dome trailhead where you park but the path actually takes you up to the vortex also, apparently, known as the “toilet bowl” by people who have lived here longer. 😉

View of the mountains that we will be hiking to!

Cool rock texture and structure
It rained recently so there’s actually some water in the desert!
Climbing up the sandstone rocks
It’s easy to get lost out here if the piles of rock that mark the trail fall over!
This is the first one of the “tanks” up at the top of one of the sandstone hills
This is the “vortex”

A different view

This is actually quite a hike to get up on top!
What’s that over there?! we must go!

Jason always has to climb to the top of wherever we’re at.
I took his picture in front of it because they look like boobs and we both had a laugh about it.
Names of the people crafty enough to climb down into the vortex!
There’s almost a little oasis on the trail
This was my favorite spot.
low angle shots!

All the airplane trails are from the Vegas airport!
It’s columnar structure like we saw in Iceland and in Oregon!
This is the official rock stacking area apparently

The trail back to the truck
some plants.
With enough time this will turn into an arch!

This hike was so much fun!  We really got to explore off the beaten path and see some cool stuff at the top of a mountain!  Luckily we remembered protein bars and water, because it was a hot one! Not much shade out here in the desert!
