Since we’re back home and summer hasn’t hit yet, it’s time to hammer out some landscaping! I’ve had a plan for my front yard for about a year now but just haven’t had the time to start on it.  First on my list was a dry creek bed from the gutter underneath the walkway down to the culvert.

My sad current creek of rocks and marking flags

Of course I bought plants first…
ok this is looking good
I filled in that awkward corner
side quest: made a table out of a planter I got for free and painted
Time to start digging
More digging
starting to line it with rocks scavenged from the fill dirt in the backyard
Looking good!
Tested during a big spring rain storm!
I added chunks of pavers to slow the water down and the filled the trench with smaller rocks

My oak leaf hydrangea is popping this spring! She’s HUGE!

Now that I finally got my dry creek bed, next on the list is to terrace the front yard.  It’s a pretty steep slope and I despise mowing it (which is really what started all of this…) but it’s going to need sections so the mulch doesn’t just get washed away.  Fun fact: paving stones are expensive so I got some chunks of log from a friend who had a tree fall down in their yard and used that instead.  By the time it rots away the plants will be large enough to keep the mulch on the hill anyway!

Finished it on up!
Ripping out the grass
Plants and mulch!

I’m doing this one chunk at a time as I find the motivation, so it was like that for a while and then I started moving stones around to create a second layer!

Mulch all the way to the driveway now!
It’s looking pretty good!
I’m just going to put a bunch of orange rocks there as a feature! and it’ll stop some water flow off the driveway!
Gotta add another chunk up to the creek bed!
Done! for now!
