I didn’t really know what to expect when we pulled up to the entrance to Conover Cove. It was very narrow, and at low tide it was very very shallow. Jason aimed Blue-J towards a stern-tie ring very very slowly until we just…stopped. Well, that’s the hull digging into the (luckily) soft sand bottom. He backed her out and we hung out on the dock for a few minutes looking at various tide charts and depth readings. Finally, we had our spot and were all tied up and ready to explore! Conover Cove on Wallace Island used to be a small resort but has since fallen into disrepair and has been abandoned. I love abandoned structures, so I had a ball shooting the old buildings. The island itself is great. There are very nice hiking trails and even a gravel beach. I found a few rocks and a lot of sea glass. We hiked out to “Panther Point”. Not named for the cats, but for the HMS Panther that ran aground on the rocks and sank. Good omen. I’m glad we have GPS and a depth finder on our boat. (It has saved our asses multiple times already!)

The coolest place in Conover Cove is the old resort gathering area. People have started leaving their names, drawings, carvings, bottles etc to comemorate their journeys here. We walked around in circles for an hour just reading all the boat names and the funny things people said. We then had to head back down to the beach and find an appropriate piece of driftwood to create one for Blue-J!

Also, I got another epic sunset. We could glimpse the sky glowing purple and red behind the trees in our protected little cove so Jason and I jumped into the dinghy and rowed out into the open water. Man, what a view! (and worth the exercise!)

I’m halfway done re-staining the wood rails on the boat. They look 1000% better than they did… with the faded rotting teak covered with equally faded and nasty blue covers. She looks like a boat that someone loves now! 🙂
