It seems like yesterday was just going way too well and the universe conspired to take us back down a notch.
When we went to bed, the glossy layer over the countertops only had a few small bubbles. When we woke up this morning every surface was covered in huge marble size bubbles that left huge marble sized craters… :/ so, effectively, everything is ruined. Dammit!
Whatever. We went outside and got the new cabinet glued in place so we could run errands and it would be dry when we got back.
Since Jason was working on wiring inside the camper, I moved outside to do another random side-task that I just thought of. Since we’re not using a hard plastic water tank, (we have a water bladder!) I was a little concerned about puncturing it on something sharp in the water tank area. I put a lot of fiberglass reinforcement in that area and that doesn’t always get sanded all the way down. But while rummaging through the shed I found a random rug that was rolled up in the corner. Mine now!
I keep getting emails from the local Joann Fabric store and this morning’s included 50% off of upholstery fabric. Looks like it was time to go to the store and get material for the seats in the dinette! 🙂
There is one last major project that Jason and I have both been dreading… more fiberglass! We have the floor for the dinette area and the bed slide-out both cut (for probably a month now!) but we don’t want to do fiberglass anymore… Either way, now that it’s nearly time for both of those pieces, we’ll have to suck it up. I found both fiberglass pieces precut to almost the perfect length, so that’s convenient at least!
Jason is running the wiring from the electrical enclosure on one side, through the water tank area, and up along the wall on the other side of the camper. To be able to locate his pipes, we had to figure out how to route the water fill for the tank. This lead to disaster #2. I special ordered some “flexible” piping in exactly the diameter I needed from Mcmaster-Carr. It was terrible. Not flexible in any way at all. Probably stiffer than actual PVC pipe… and the fittings didn’t even fit inside it. >:/ I got the heat gun out and got the fittings to work. Then I was test fitting one section of it and realized that the pipe hit the bolt that holds the shell tie down on. So I had to heat that up and bash it with a hammer. It was still never going to work… What annoys me the most is that I bought 5′ of this pipe for $25 because it was going to be exactly what I needed… but they tacked on another $25 for shipping… Which is ridiculous. They also don’t give you a shipping quote until after you place your order. So not only do I have an overly expensive piece of pipe, but I can’t actually use it. >:/ Back to Home Depot… MEH.
I gave up on the camper at that point and went back to work on tearing apart the boat cover to turn it into a camper cover. The cat thought that I made him a tent and “helped” me.
We ended up needing some more supplies so we went back out for the second time today and got some more epoxy, found some pipe that might work, and some electrical stuff for Jason. When we got back, I started sanding down the countertops so that we can RE-gloss them and fix the bubbles. Because they’re not usable as is… Dangit.
After a few hours of baking in the hot sun it was time to do the other side of the dinette floor and the bed slide. This time the bed part is getting TWO layers. All of our weight will be on this and it won’t be supported in the middle, so we added some fiberglass.
After our trip to Home Depot we finally got the right type of tubing for the water fill! I had to lubricate the fitting ends with chapstick, but I got it all fit up! Still waiting on the final connector for the 1-1/4″ hose barb to 1-1/2″ ID fitting on the shell.
So while i was messing around with all of this, Jason had been dutifully working on the wiring the entire time.
