So far most of my posts about our sweet camper have been about the main shell piece. However, to be functional it has to have a roof. Jason had an idea for how to shape and build it, so while the fiberglass was drying on the main shell outside we moved into the garage to get started!
This is the same pink “Foamular” house insulation from Home Depot that we originally considered using to build the camper out of. I’m very glad we didn’t do it. After working with the Divinycell, this stuff is shit!
So he’s got the shape he wants laid out on the garage floor. Then he’s going to trim the real foam and glue it together into the roof “tub” assembly. I didn’t really want the roof to stick up this high, but it kind of looks like a vintage Land Rover and I’m digging it. We also decided to taper the cabover part down. That, coupled with the taper at the front, should make it look super sleek!
We definitely made this way more complicated than we could have with the taper in both directions up front over the cab, but I think it makes it look way better! Totally worth the effort! It hasn’t been too bad until now, but the side angled pieces required a little bit of massaging to fit. Luckily, Jason had the perfect random woodworking tool to make quick work of it.
So now that we have everything pinned together on the garage floor and fitting like we want to, it’s time to start assembly! We decided to fiberglass both sides of the big pieces so they would be stiff enough to not move around when we glue it all together. There just happened to be enough extra fiberglass to cut strips for the side pieces and just enough room in the shed to lay it up also!
We even have a plan for how it’s going to attach to the camper! (we’ve changed our minds so many times by now about that!)
